Vale council will work with Cardiff to help build Pont y
Werin
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has said it will do all it can to
help Cardiff Council build the Pont y Werin over the River Ely. The
council’s capital programme includes funding of £200,000 towards
the bridge.
The Cardiff Council scheme will provide a pedestrian link
between Cardiff’s International Sports Village and Penarth. Cardiff
Council identified the need to provide some form of crossing over
the River Ely, for pedestrians and cyclists between Penarth Marina
and the International Sports Village, at an early stage in the
development of proposals for the Village.
Building the bridge will have what are called ‘landfall’ issues
for Penarth, such as parking and access routes for pedestrians and
cyclists.
Vale council director of economic and environmental
regeneration, Rob Quick, said: “As one side of the proposed bridge
will be in the Vale our officers have attended meetings with their
counterparts at Cardiff Council. The Vale Council will be more than
willing to help progress the scheme with Cardiff in terms of
assessing the planning, technical and traffic management issues
that will arise on the Penarth side.”
Leader of the Vale Council, Gordon Kemp, said: “I am aware of
the keen interest in Penarth regarding this scheme and am pleased
to confirm the council’s interest in progressing it.”
