Tesco Express move on to Barry town centre site in July
The start of development work on a new Tesco Express store in
the centre of Barry in July will lead to the closure of a temporary
car park.
The store will be built on a site at the junction of Holton Road
and Evans Street which was, for many years, occupied by the famous
Victoria Hotel.
Following initial site investigation works, a start on
construction is scheduled for the autumn, with the store expected
to open for business in spring 2009.
To compensate for the loss of the temporary car park, the Vale
of Glamorgan Council has, as a key feature of its multi-million
pound facelift of the town centre, already provided a new car park
at the corner of Thompson Street and Greenwood Street.
Cabinet member for economic development and regeneration Cllr
Rhodri Traherne said: "I'm sure that this store will be a very
popular addition to Barry town centre and is further evidence that
the new road layout and environmental improvements have provided a
boost for investor confidence in the area. Tesco are just one of a
number of new retailers who have or will soon feature in the Barry
retail experience including Holland and Barrett and Subway."
Cabinet member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox
added: "Local and visiting shoppers have a good choice of both on
street and off street car parks in Barry town centre for which
there is no charge."

arrangements in Barry town centre is available from the Vale
