Summer funTourist information centres open daily from Easter

The tourist information centres at Barry Island and Penarth will operate daily from Easter until the end of September, the Vale of Glamorgan Council's cabinet has agreed.

The centres, which have been praised in a satisfaction survey as providing an "informative, efficient and friendly service," will open from 10am to 5.30pm.

Conducted last summer, the survey also revealed that 98 per cent of respondents rated the friendliness of staff as good or excellent, 96.1 per cent praised the efficiency of the service, and 95.5 per cent and 82.4 per cent said information provided and the range of brochures/leaflets respectively was good or excellent.

Council leader Cllr Margaret Alexander said: "The current administration is fully committed to promoting tourism across the Vale and ensuring that the level and quality of information for residents and visitors is maintained."

Both the Barry Island and Penarth centres provide an all-Wales information and accommodation booking service and, despite reduced hours, dealt with 5,183 and 8,299 visitors/enquiries in 2007. Staff are also dealing with an increase in on-line enquiries.

The free and informative annual brochures is produced by the Vale council in close collaboration with Bridgend County Borough Council.

Vale council cabinet member for tourism and leisure Cllr Gwyn John said the brochure 'showcased' the region, with its beautiful and appealing coastline, as an all the year round place for visitors.

As usual, the 2008 brochure, which can be downloaded from the council website, is also available at exhibitions, tourist information centres throughout the UK, many motorway service stations, ports, libraries and council offices.
