'School of the Year' cup for Erw'r Delyn gymnasts

 

A team of gymnasts from a Penarth school is celebrating an impressive haul of 11 awards at Welsh national championships.

 

Competing at the Rotary Special Schools Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at the Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff, Ysgol Erw'r Delyn picked up 10 individual medals in disciplines including ball, hoop and ribbon, and the 'School of the Year' cup.

  

Welcoming the school's success, Vale of Glamorgan Council Disability Sport Wales development officer Linda Ruston said: “I’m thrilled the youngsters did so well. Clearly the hard work of entrants and support staff has paid off and the school should be exceptionally proud of their achievement."

 

Winning pupils from Ysgol Erw'r DelynTeam members were Joe Broom, Jacob Grainger, Matthew Cosslett, Luke Day, Sam Marshall Bond, James Elliot, Shahad Alhadarif, Elaine Dzregah, Maliha Asaf, Shaydon Morgan and Nathan Smart.

 

Some of the school support staff were among the crowd cheering on the gymnasts and included teacher Karen Coyle and learning support assistants Jacky Bousie, Sharon Walsh, Debbie Stavrakis, Alison Cartwright and Rebecca Boffy.

 

All the competitors received medals and were delighted to have taken part after progressing through a series of heats earlier in the year.

 

The medal winners were:

 

Ball: Second - Jacob Grainger; Third -  Shaydon Morgan.

 

Hoop: First (joint) - Joe Broom and Jacob Grainger; Third - Shaydon Morgan.

 

Ribbon, junior: First (joint) - Maliha Asaf and Nathan Smart. Senior: First - Shahad Alhadarif ; Second - Jacob Grainger; Third - Matthew Cosslett.
