Grant boost to green waste recycling service
A company handling green waste for the Vale of Glamorgan
Council has been boosted by a grant from the Welsh Assembly
Government.
Based at Penllyne Estates, Cowbridge Compost will use the money
to purchase new machines to compost the increasing amount of green
waste taken to the farm from the Vale kerbside service.
Residents provided over 400 tonnes of compost during April
through the kerbside service and 100 tonnes through the household
recycling centres at Llandow and Sully.
The new machines will be used to move and aerate the compost
before it is spread on the land. Crops grown at Penllyne include
maize, wheat, vegetables and grass for cattle feed.
Farm manager Mike Hallet said: “I am really pleased that the
Welsh Assembly has given us the grant. We offer the Vale council a
sustainable solution to the disposal of green waste in the
county.”
Green waste is collected once every two weeks on the same day as
plastic and cardboard. Residents can purchase either reusable or
disposable bags for the service.
Both types of bags can be bought from the council offices in
Barry (Civic), Penarth, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge. The
biodegradable bags are priced at three for £1, and the re-usable
bags at £1 each.
Garden waste can be taken free of charge to garden waste skips
at Llandow and Sully. The green waste from these sites is also
composted locally.
Council waste development manager Nicola Williams said: “I hope
that residents find the service easy to use and continue to support
our efforts to compost as much waste as possible locally.”
