Youngsters enjoy a
fantasy netball festival!
Twenty-seven teams from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan
entered the Primary School Fantasy Netball Festival 2008 at the
National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.
The festival, for boys and girls, was a partnership project
between the Welsh Netball Association and Dragon Sport, and focused
on participation, fair play and fun.
With activities tailored for seven to 11-year-olds, Dragon Sport
is a Sports Council for Wales initiative. In addition to netball,
Dragon Sport centres on seven other key sports – athletics,
cricket, football, golf, hockey, rugby and tennis.
Nine Vale primary
schools competed at the festival – St Brides, Wick and Marcross, St
David's, Sully, St Helen's, Llancarfan, Gwenfo, All Saints and
Victoria Primary School.
Current Welsh goal shooter Shenaide Blucher was the main
organiser of the day and she also judged a poster competition in
which pupils were invited to design a poster based on her profile.
The competition winner will be notified shortly.
On the day, Shenaide was delighted to talk to the young players
about their mutual love of the sport, and handed out signed
netballs and a t-shirt to individual winners of the 'skills
stations', which focused on the individual and team disciplines of
shooting and passing.
Bryn Hafren Comprehensive pupils were also on hand to help
with the smooth running of the festival and Rachel McGuinness, the
Vale Council’s Dragon Sport co-ordinator, was delighted with the
success of the day. Rachel said: “The nine Vale teams did
themselves proud in our fantasy league. It really was a day to
remember and we saw some great play. The GCSE students from Bryn
Hafren also showed remarkable maturity and their behaviour was
impeccable.”
