Awards for Vale's sporting personalities

 

An annual awards ceremony has again recognised and rewarded talented sportsmen and women from across the Vale of Glamorgan.

 

Nathan Mullett receives his awardOrganised by the Vale District Sports Council and supported by the Vale council's sports and play development team, the prestigious annual Sports Personality of the Year was held at the Memorial Hall and Theatre in Barry.

 

Popular television presenter Arfon Haines-Davies once again hosted the event which was sponsored by the Vale council, Genero, who specialise in the production and staging of live events, and Baddeley's Shoe Repairers.

 

Special guests included Cllr Gwyn John and Vale AM Jane Hutt and, from the world of sport, surfer Simon Tucker, Glamorgan cricketer Michael O’Shea, former professional snooker player Anthony Davies and Mark Frost, from the Sports Council for Wales.

 

Patricia Finch, community coach winnerVale council sports and play development manager Karen Davies said: “The sports personality evening is now recognised as the premier ceremony for celebrating sporting achievements within the area. Over the years we have seen a host of previously shortlisted performers going on to achieve worldwide success in their respective sports. Efforts are truly inspirational.”

 

District sports council chair Angela Price thanked all committee members and partners, including the Vale council, for their hard work in staging the event. She added: “This evening is about celebrating successes of all Vale sportsmen and women. Everyone should be proud of their achievements.”

 

All winners, whose names will be engraved on appropriate shields, each received a special commemorative glass trophy.

  

The proceeds of a special raffle will be donated to Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, and the District Sports Council to assist with event funding.

 

The Vale Sports Personality of the Year results:

 

Junior winner Elliott EvansJunior male: Elliot Evans (Vale Karate Club); runners-up, Michael Morgan and Iwan Mepham.

 

Junior female: Alexandra Greenfield (cycling); runners-up, Ruby Hartery and Katie Bradbury/Chloe Fry.

 

Team: Vale Karate under-12s; runners-up, Barry YMCA Gymnastics Elite Squad and Boccia Rollers.

 

Senior male: Nathan Mullett (Barry YMCA Gymnastics Club); runners-up, Clinton Purnell and Connor Lewis.

 

Senior female: Olivia Bryl (Barry YMCA Gymnastics Club).

 

School: Rhws Primary; runner-up, Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg.
