Awards for Vale's sporting personalities
An annual awards ceremony has again recognised and rewarded
talented sportsmen and women from across the Vale of
Glamorgan.
Organised by the Vale District Sports Council and
supported by the Vale council's sports and play development team,
the prestigious annual Sports Personality of the Year was held at
the Memorial Hall and Theatre in Barry.
Popular television presenter Arfon Haines-Davies once again
hosted the event which was sponsored by the Vale council, Genero,
who specialise in the production and staging of live events, and
Baddeley's Shoe Repairers.
Special guests included Cllr Gwyn John and Vale AM Jane Hutt
and, from the world of sport, surfer Simon Tucker, Glamorgan
cricketer Michael O’Shea, former professional snooker player
Anthony Davies and Mark Frost, from the Sports Council for
Wales.
Vale council sports and play
development manager Karen Davies said: “The sports personality
evening is now recognised as the premier ceremony for celebrating
sporting achievements within the area. Over the years we have seen
a host of previously shortlisted performers going on to achieve
worldwide success in their respective sports. Efforts are truly
inspirational.”
District sports council chair Angela Price thanked all committee
members and partners, including the Vale council, for their hard
work in staging the event. She added: “This evening is about
celebrating successes of all Vale sportsmen and women. Everyone
should be proud of their achievements.”
All winners, whose names will be engraved on appropriate
shields, each received a special commemorative glass trophy.
The proceeds of a special raffle will be donated to Ty Hafan
Children's Hospice, and the District Sports Council to assist with
event funding.
