Penarth and Cowbridge libraries go wireless

Cllr Hampton tests out the new wireless internet with Marcus Payne at Penarth libraryLibrary users at Penarth and Cowbridge libraries can now use their own laptops to access the internet following the installation of new wireless technology.

Thanks to a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government, the new wireless system allows users to access the web for free inside the libraries and in the case of Cowbridge, from the adjacent gardens too.

Marcus Payne, senior librarian at Penarth library, said: “The service is already proving popular with students who are busy putting the finishing touches to their projects and coursework and spend a fair amount of time in the library at this time of year.”

Melanie Weeks, community librarian at Cowbridge library, said: "It's great to be able to sit in the gardens and catch up your e-mails or surf the Internet for information."

Anyone wanting to use the service will need to be registered as a library member and have their own laptop with wireless facilities installed on it.

Cllr Hampton, cabinet member for lifelong learning, said: “The computer facilities in the library are freely available to library members and are already a very popular venue, providing computer access for large numbers of people.  It is a particularly valuable service, especially in the current financial climate, with people coming in to find information about jobs, to prepare their CVs and to submit job applications online.”
