JRSOs get together to celebrate annual achievements

Vale JRSOs recently celebrated their annual achievements at a special get-togetherThe third annual Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) get-together saw over 60 Vale primary school children, along with their teachers and helpers, attend to celebrate their achievements over the past year.

The day offered an exciting line-up, including demonstrations by a crew from Barry Fire Station, who showed the type of equipment they use for rescuing people trapped in their vehicles, officers from South Wales Police Road Safety team with their squad car, as well as an actual crashed car scenario with dummies hosted by South Wales Fire and Rescue personnel.

The JRSOs also gave presentations to a captive audience on what they have achieved at their own schools and the day was finished off with a special performance from the Gregory Brothers’ road safety and recycling roadshow which has been touring Vale primary and special schools to rave reviews.

John Rogers, the Vale Council’s JRSO scheme organiser said, “Yet again the JRSO get-together was a huge success. I would like to thank everyone for contributing to such a worthwhile event. The JRSOs were a credit to themselves and the schools they proudly represent and their energy and enthusiasm in spreading the word of road safety was simply amazing. Keep up the great work you are doing!”

The Junior Road Safety Officer scheme is run by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s road safety team as part of a national scheme which empowers children to highlight road safety issues amongst fellow pupils, teachers and their local community.

Several primary-age children are chosen each year in each member school, where they receive a JRSO uniform and a folder full of ideas for running competitions and assemblies on road safety in their school.

The JRSO scheme recently celebrated its 30th member school joining since it began operating back in 2004/05 when it had just six schools. It is hoped that all schools in the area will eventually have their own JRSO representatives.
