Active for Life celebrates 2,000th member - 01/12/06
The Vale of Glamorgan Active for Life scheme which aims to
reduce the risk of heart disease across the area and, ultimately,
save lives has welcomed its 2,000th member.
To mark the occasion, Yvonne De Claire was presented with
flowers by Penarth Leisure Centre Manager Scott Murray.
The Big Lottery-funded scheme operates a 12-week referral
programme for people wishing to improve their medical condition
and/or state of health by increasing activity levels
Yvonne, who was referred to the scheme by her GP, is striving to
get fitter and lose weight to help control diabetes and improve her
overall health and sense of well being.
Following a thorough fitness assessment, Yvonne was provided
with a unique programme including a focus on cardio vascular work
which allows her to use the state of the art ‘Technogym’ equipment
and train whilst watching her favourite television channel or
listening to music.
Pete O’Sullivan, who manages LifeStyle Health & Fitness at
the Penarth centre, which is being attended by Yvonne, says:
"Yvonne has approached the Active for Life referral with exactly
the right attitude. You can see that she is already enjoying being
active and is ready to make a lifestyle change. We expect to see
great results from her in just 12 weeks.”
With flexible working hours, Yvonne has decided to use the
LifeStyle facilities first thing over three mornings a week, and
says: “I love it! My visits set me up for the day. I leave with a
real buzz and a spring in my step.”
Even though she has only been a member for a couple of weeks,
Yvonne explains that the key operated equipment is very easy to
use, and the staff have all been very welcoming.
Jon Rogers, LifeStyle and Active for Life Operations Manager,
adds: “We are delighted the scheme has reached an impressive 2,000
members and that the team have contributed to ensuring healthier
Vale residents. Physical inactivity doubles your risk of developing
coronary heart disease and is the main cause of death in the UK. It
is, therefore, vital we work together to make a difference.”
