Beavers, Cubs and Scouts help spread recycling message - 01/12/06

Members of Scout groups in Barry, Llandough and Penarth are helping the Vale of Glamorgan Council promote recycling by printing a message on Christmas cards being sorted for delivery locally via their special post.

The youngsters, aged six – 15, are using special stamps to print a ‘Recycle this Christmas’ message onto the cards in the hope that it will encourage Vale residents to recycle as much as possible over the holidays.

The 1st Barry Scout Group were busy stamping cards this week and recently had a visit from one of Council’s waste awareness officers. Akela Stuart Fraser said they had really enjoyed learning about recycling, and added: “The response from our Cubs was excellent. They have all promised to ‘do their best’ for recycling and are really enjoying the fact that they are helping to protect the environment both now and for the future.”

Vale waste awareness officer Helen Ball said: “We all produce more rubbish at Christmas through eating, drinking and giving cards and presents. We also tend to clear out things like clothes and toys to make way for new. Much of this waste can be recycled using the council’s recycling services and local charity shops, and we were thrilled when the Scouts volunteered to help us promote our ‘Recycle this Christmas’ message.”

Helen continued: “We are always keen to work with young people to help educate them about the importance of recycling and how they can make a real difference to the environment. They will, hopefully, become committed recyclers and carry this on for life.”

Vale residents can recycle their Christmas cards at larger Tesco and W H Smith stores or donate them to pupils taking part in the council’s Christmas card recycling competition. Participating schools will be listed on the council’s website – www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk - from Monday, 18th December.
