Barry Comprehensive pupils help to launch new Christmas card
competition - 05/12/06
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has launched a new schools’
Christmas card recycling competition to reduce the amount of cards
ending up in Vale bins in the New Year.
There are some great prizes up for grabs including a portable
DVD player and an IPod for individual winners, plus cash prizes for
the winning schools.
All schools in the Vale have been invited to enter and the
primary school pupil and secondary school pupil (from participating
schools) collecting the most cards by 12th January will win a
prize.
Vouchers to the value of £200 will also be awarded to the
primary and secondary school that collects the most cards per pupil
overall. This will be worked out based on pupil numbers so even our
smallest schools are in with a chance to win!
Barry Comprehensive School were the first to register to take
part in the competition. Assistant Head Teacher, Jenny Ford said:
“Pupils at Barry have recently formed an Eco Committee and are
really keen to get involved in a range of projects. The Christmas
card appeal is seasonal and pupils are really keen to promote
recycling at this busy time of the year. They're hoping that one of
them will win the IPod!”
Everyone in the Vale can help support the competition by
donating cards to pupils attending one of the participating schools
– details of these will be listed under the recycling section of
the council’s website www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk from 18th
December.
Alternatively, you can recycle your Christmas cards at Tesco
(excluding 'Express' stores), WH Smith or TK Max from 2nd – 31st
January. See in stores for details.
Residents are asked not to put cards in with their paper or
cardboard recycling as unfortunately the council’s contractor will
not accept them.
Clifford Parish, Operational Manager for Waste Management and
Cleansing at the Vale Council explained: “We would ask residents to
support this competition or use one of the participating shops as
unfortunately we cannot accept cards in with our recycling. We can
only collect what our contractor will accept and if you do mix
cards in with your recycling this could result in the whole vehicle
of recycling being rejected by the contractor and ending up in
landfill.“
Clifford continued: "In addition to significantly reducing the
waste in our bins, all cards collected for recycling will help the
Woodland Trust, a national conservation charity, to plant
trees.”
