Free collection of Christmas trees from kerbside -
22/12/06
The Vale of Glamorgan Council will again be collecting
Christmas trees at the kerbside for recycling in the New Year.
The free service will run from Monday to Friday, January 8 to
12, and is very easy to use.
After the removal of all decorations, trees should be placed out
by 7am on the individual's normal rubbish collection day. It will
be collected in a dedicated refuse style wagon.
As in previous years, all trees collected will be put to good
use locally. The council has developed a partnership with a farm in
Cowbridge who shred the trees and use them as cattle bedding.
Eventually the bedding will be used as a soil conditioner on the
farm’s fields and some will be added to the compost that they
produce and sell locally, thereby closing the recycling loop.
Head of Visible Services Miles Punter said that the council was
always looking for ways to help residents recycle more of their
waste and he hoped that many would take advantage of this free
service. He added: “We launched the kerbside collection in January,
2006, which resulted in 12,000 trees being composted. We hope to
collect even more this year. Residents are reminded to remove all
decoration as we can only collect bare trees and that this service
is for the collection of real trees only, please!“
Real Christmas trees can also be recycled free of charge in the
garden waste skips at Llandow and Sully Household Recycling
Centres.
Residents are reminded that the council also offer a weekly
kerbside recycling service and collect paper, glass and cans one
week followed by clean plastic and cardboard the next. Please
contact us for a collection calendar for your area.
