Grant for Grade 2 listed church - 13/12/06
A project to undertake major repairs at an ancient Vale of
Glamorgan church has been boosted by a charitable trust grant.
St Cattwg's Church, Llanmaes, has been awarded a £3,000 Welsh
Church Act Estate Committee grant from the Vale of Glamorgan
Council.
The church is hoping to indentify funding of £12,000 by March
next year to trigger a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to
undertake work on the western tower containing three bells and to
have the church's east window repaired.
Although the Grade 2 listed church dates back to the 13th
century, it is of a much earlier Celtic foundation.
Following the presentation of the cheque by committee chairman
Cllr Fred Johnson, churchwarden Jeffery Robertson said: "Thanks to
the generosity of of the Welsh Church Acts committee, work on the
church can commence sooner than anticipated. Members of the church
were thrilled to hear that they were receiving such a large amount
of money.”
Also receiving a £3,000 grant from the committee was Bethesda
Chapel at Fairoaks, Dinas Powys, which is undertaking building
improvement works, including the provision of soft furnishings,
furniture and kitchen equipment, to facilitate the use of the
premises by the wider community.
The chairman of the Welsh Church Acts Trust, Cllr Fred Johnson,
said: "The committee was pleased to support these two very
worthwhile local projects.
"The committee welcomes applications for cash grants from
community groups in the Vale for voluntary work that they are doing
within their communities to support local people."
