Mums and babies enjoy Christmas lunch - 15/12/06
A Barry-based project helping teenage mums has enjoyed a
special Christmas lunch.
Based at Gladstone College, the Partnership for Young Parents
(14 to 19 year olds) with babies involves Sure Start, Barry College
and the Vale of Glamorgan Council's pupil support services.
The lunch made by Sure Start volunteers was a culmination of the
term's weekly luncheon club –"Ladies and Babies that Lunch" – at
which the young mums are encouraged to sit at a table, with
children in high chairs, and enjoy home made, healthy and
nutritious food.
Sure Start programme co-ordinator Antonia Bridges said: "Our
teenage mums are attending the college five days a week being
taught maths, English and IT. Their babies are in a creche and they
are encouraged to be parents first whilst continuing their
education.
"Last year 70% went on to full-time further education. It's hard
being a teenage parent, up in the night, and with constant demands,
yet they are continuing their education and we are extremely proud
of them and the project."
Mums and babies enjoyed all the usual Christmas treats, with
each baby who attends the PYP creche being given a Christmas gift
kindly donated by Legal & General.
