Mayor's recognition for work of community centre volunteers -
08/02/07
The excellent work of volunteers in running community centres
across the Vale of Glamorgan has been recognised at a civic
reception.
Hosted by Vale Mayor Cllr Nic Hodges, the event was attended by
individuals representing 12 of the area's 22 centres.
The volunteers enjoyed a tour of the new County Library before
being welcomed to the new Mayor's Parlour for the reception which
recognised their invaluable help in the past year to ensure the
smooth day-to-day management of centres.
Providing affordable facilities for local people to meet on a
regular basis and participate in a wide variety of activities, the
centres are located across Barry, Penarth, Dinas Powys and the
rural Vale and are used by all members of the community from the
very young (usually attending a playgroup or a parent and toddler
session) to senior citizens who participate in activities including
dance, bingo and various hobbies. They also host unusual clubs, eg,
a rabbit club for pet owners.
Social activities cover entertainment, celebrations, sport,
education and health - the list of possible uses is endless – and
many clubs and groups also rely upon the centres as an invaluable
meeting space.
Vale community development officer Siân Vaughan said: “Community
centres make a big difference to the lives of local people, with
some of them welcoming 600 customers per week.
"A recent satisfaction survey showed that 95% of customers feel
they receive good value for money when they attend an activity.
This is all down to the commitment of these special
volunteers.”
