Smoke-Free Premises Hotline for Vale businesses - 01/02/07
Vale of Glamorgan businesses, which are already smoke free, are
still being encouraged to attend a series of advisory sessions on
the ban on smoking in enclosed public places legislation which
comes into force on April 2.
Organised by the Vale Council, who will enforce the legislation
in their area, the sessions will cover all aspects of the new law,
what businesses need to do to comply and guidance on exemptions,
etc.
Operational Manager (Regulatory Services) Kate Thompson said
initial feedback to the council invitation had indicated that many
businesses were already smoke free but not fully aware of the
legislation.
"It is extremely encouraging that a number of businesses already
operate a smoke free policy but they do need to be aware of the
full extent of the legislation, including the necessity to display
appropriate no smoking signs at or near the entrances to their
premises," she said. "Non compliance is an offence under the new
legislation."
Businesses who were sent initial information from the Welsh
Assembly Government in November about the new legislation will this
month receive guidance packs, including copies of the necessary
signs.
However, if a business was not included in the earlier Assembly
mailshot, and requires copies of the signs or further information
about the advisory sessions, they can contact the Smoke-Free
Premises Hotline on (01446) 709105.
The new legislation covers all workplaces, including health care
and educational establishments. It will also apply to factories,
offices, restaurants, cinemas, leisure and shopping centres and all
work vehicles and public transport vehicles, such as buses and
taxis.
Kate Thompson added: "It is the Council’s intention to work
closely with local businesses to build compliance through advice
and support."
