£121,000 boost from Active Lifestyles Fund - 25/01/07

Residents of the Vale of Glamorgan are set to reap the benefits of a sizeable cash investment into the health of the region.

The Vale Council Cabinet has accepted just over £121,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Active Lifestyle Fund which will be ploughed into innovative physical activity projects in the area.

The successful projects range from the provision of funding for the refurbishment of the basement area of St Nicholas Community Centre in Barry to the provision of an activity trail at Cosmeston Lakes and Country Park.

Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Gwyn John said: "All these schemes will contribute to greater opportunities for physical activity."

Assembly Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport Alun Pugh believes the investment from the Active Communities Fund will pay dividends in creating a healthier Vale. “We want more people to live healthy and independent lives and that means taking exercise more often," he said. "This doesn’t have to be an expensive gym membership; it could be walking, cycling or taking part in a class in your local community centre. We want to remove barriers to people taking exercise and make it easier for people to be active close to home.”

The Council projects being supported are:

• Active for Life outreach programme (£740)

• Cycle training (£20,000)

• Glamorgan Heritage Coast project (£10,000)

• Barry Comprehensive School community fitness suite (£16,578)

• Cosmeston Lakes Country Park activity trail (£25,000)

• Cowbridge Youth Centre climbing rock (£25,000)

• Castle Fields (Llanblethian/Cowbidge) access improvements (£35,000)

Non local authority projects are:

• Lower Penarth Community Association cycle rack (£2,000)

• Peterston Church and Community Hall – refurbishment of main hall floor (£10,950)

• St Nicholas Community Centre – refurbishment of basement area (£30,000)
