Barry town centre regeneration scheme underway - 08/01/07
The first phase of a major programme of improvements aimed at
revitalising Holton Road and Thompson Street in the centre of Barry
has commenced.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been awarded a £1m grant from
the Welsh Assembly Government for the work, which is due to be
completed in October, 2007.
The Council has appointed LGA Limited, of Bridgend, to undertake
the works which will include:
· retaining the one-way traffic system and improving the
highway;
· improving pavements and widening, where possible, to create a
more pedestrian friendly environment;
· upgrading street furniture, and
· improving the provision of short stay parking for shoppers and
businesses
Council Leader Cllr Margaret Alexander said: “Feedback from a
variety of sources has been and will continue to be an important
consideration in the implementation of this essential work.
"We are fully aware of the disruptive impact such work will
bring to the town centre and recognise the importance of continual
liaison to minimise disruption as far as is reasonably
practical.
"It is my hope that LGA Limited perform well both in terms of
adherence to programme and to keep disruption to businesses and
their customers to the absolute minimum during the construction
period.”
Albert Birkett, Managing Director of LGA Limited, said: “As a
business person myself, I realise the impact that this type of
project can have on a business and understand the need to work
together, hand in hand, with the shopkeepers and the local
community.
"To this end, I will do my utmost to ensure that all of my staff
are aware of the individual needs of each business and that we
endeavour to minimise disruption to the shopkeepers and their
customers.
"We have our own liaison officer, who will communicate with all
businesses so that any issues can be dealt with as soon as
possible. I myself will be personally involved in this project and
look forward to a successful outcome to our joint efforts."
