Leisure centre leads the way with energy saving initiatives -

An energy-saving initiative at one of the Vale of Glamorgan
Council's leisure centres is set to achieve significant
savings.
Invertors have been fixed to pumps controlling water circulation
in the Penarth Leisure Centre swimming pool and, since
installation, night-time electricity consumption has been the
lowest recorded for many years.
The cost of the invertors was met by a small "Invest to Save
Fund" under the control of Vale Energy Manager David Powell, who
said: “Certain technologies in the right situation will save so
much energy that they can pay for themselves in a very short space
of time. Motor invertors are a good example of such technology. It
is hoped that the experience gained at Penarth will give others
confidence to use these invertors more widely.”
Penarth centre manager Scott Murray is delighted with their
installation. “The quality of the pool water is as good as ever,"
he said. "Early predictions also reveal that, as a result of using
invertors, annual savings are going to be significant.”
Penarth, like other Vale leisure centres, is committed to
adopting energy saving methods and other examples include fitting
motion sensors on lights, installing energy saving bulbs,
implementing power saving devices on photocopiers, recycling as far
as possible and using timers on external lighting.
