Peter roars into new Vale Council sports role - 29/01/07
A man will bring a wealth of sporting experience to his new
role with the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Joining the council's sports development team as Dragon Sports
assistant is Wenvoe resident Peter Hardwick who will be working
with seven to 11 year olds across the area.
The Vale Dragon Sports team is led by Rachel McGuinness and, in
a part-time role, Pete will work with schools and clubs, of which
he already has a sound knowledge, supporting teachers and
recruiting volunteers.
Previously employed by the Cricket Board of Wales to develop
opportunities in local schools, Pete continues to coach the sport
at county level for under-11s and under-14s. From attending Dragon
Sports tutoring and mentoring courses, Pete emulates some of the
English fielding player drills and encourages video analysis.
His wider sporting experience encompasses being a football
referee and a Level 1 hockey umpire. He played rugby (outside half)
in his school days and, before moving to Wales, enjoyed society
golf.
Urging involvement in sport from a very early age, Peter speaks
of establishing lifelong friendships through shared enjoyment,
keeping fit, helping combat problems such as obesity and potential
to achieve beyond expectations.
Focussing on athletics, cricket, football, golf, hockey,
netball, rugby and tennis, Dragon Sports aims to broaden the
interests of children by targeting those who already take part in
sport and by involving others who currently lack opportunities
outside school PE lessons.
Peter says: “One of my aims will be to break down stereotypical
barriers, for example, by encouraging more girls to try the
non-contact game of tag rugby and involving boys in netball. I look
forward to promoting the Dragon Sport principles and continuing to
work with community members.”
Vale Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism Cllr Gwyn John said:
“I am delighted to welcome Peter on board and look forward to
seeing the Dragon Sport initiatives which will broaden sporting
interest for seven to 11 year olds outside their standard PE
lessons.”
