Cowbridge youngsters take part in recycling project - 05/03/07

Young members of 1st Cowbridge Scout Group have been learning all about recycling to help them work towards a global awareness award.

The Cubs from the Impala Pack, aged 8 – 11, took a break from their regular activities to meet a Waste Awareness Officer from the Vale Of Glamorgan Council. She encouraged them to think about the rubbish that is produced at home and what happens to it once it is thrown away.

A variety of recycling games were played during the session to identify what items can be recycled and the Cubs designed a poster to help promote what they had learnt to take home to their families.

Vale Council Waste Awareness Officer Helen Ball said: “We are always keen to work with young people to help educate them about the importance of recycling and how they can make a real difference to the environment. They will hopefully become committed recyclers and carry this on for life."

Alan Izzard, Akela (Scout group leader), said the Cubs had really enjoyed learning about recycling. He said: “The response from our Cubs was excellent. They have all promised to ‘do their best’ for recycling and are really enjoying the fact that they are helping to protect the environment both now and for the future.”

Miles Punter, the Vale Council's Head of Visible Services, is delighted that the Cubs responded so positively. He said: “Up to 85% of our household rubbish can be recycled or composted and the Vale Of Glamorgan Council is particularly interested in encouraging young people to learn how they can help protect the environment by disposing of rubbish responsibly. Projects like these help to do this as well as providing a fun activity for the group.”
