Green success for Cadoxton Primary School - 02/03/07
Cadoxton Primary School pupils and teachers are thrilled that
their environmental efforts have been rewarded with their first
ever silver award in the prestigious Eco-Schools programme.
Eco-Schools is the national scheme run by Keep Wales Tidy that
recognises all the great environmental work taking place in
schools, and highlights areas for improvement. Energy use, waste
reduction and healthy eating are just some of the topics to come
under the spotlight.
The pupils at the Barry school have always been keen on the
environment, but the last year has seen a big push on pulling all
their good green work together.
Davina Lingard and Louise Williams are the lead teachers on all
things environmental, and Davina explained: “In June last year we
held our first Eco Day. This really enthused everyone, and our
efforts have gone from strength to strength, with the result that
we’ve reached silver level. I’m really delighted.”
A big part of the green push has involved looking at waste in
the school, focusing on the reduce, reuse and recycle message.
Support for the school's efforts has come from The Vale of
Glamorgan Council as part of the ‘What’s in your bin?’ waste
awareness campaign.
The Vale Council’s waste awareness officer Sam Harrison summed
up why she was happy to work with the school, saying: “We used last
year’s Eco Day to really tap into the enthusiasm at the school, and
stress the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling rather
than throwing waste away. Cadoxton is a big school, so projects are
being tackled in stages. This early achievement will really spur
everyone on – well done to all at Cadoxton Primary School.”
