Judy the cow helps to spread the healthy eating message -
15/03/07
Pupils from Ysgol Erw’r Delyn in Penarth were recently treated
to a visit from a local farmer, and special guest Judy the cow, as
part of a “Food for thought” healthy eating project.
The project encourages children to make healthy food choices,
and shows them how farmers produce food. Developed by teachers and
local farmers' wives, and supported by farmers and local food
producers, the project is delivered in schools through a one-day
session that links in with all aspects of the curriculum.
The project includes:
• A talk on different foods and where they come from,
• Designing a breakfast menu,
• Making bread,
• Making smoothies,
• Eating bread and butter made earlier in the day,
• A visit from the farmer and a cow, which is milked in front of
the whole school.
Ysgol Erw’r Delyn Headteacher Mike Farrell said: “The day was a
great success! The pupils’ knowledge of healthy food has improved
and they had great fun – especially the visit from Judy the Cow. We
are very grateful to Carol Maher and Sue Roberts for arranging the
event."
Ysgol Erw’r Delyn is one of a number of schools that will be
benefiting from the project over the next few months, thanks to
funding from the Vale of Glamorgan Healthy Schools scheme.
