Further expansion of award-winning scheme - 13/11/06
Gates are about to be installed on the next phase of the highly
successful Alleygates scheme in Barry.
A crime reduction project involving ‘"sealing off" numerous back
lanes across the town, Alleygates is a partnership project
involving the Vale of Glamorgan Council and South Wales Police,
together with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Security
gates are installed in rear lanes in order to prevent burglaries,
vandalism and other anti-social activities.
Alleygates earned national recognition in 2005 when it was named
as the “Best Community Initiative” at the annual Association of
Public Service Excellence (APSE) awards.
Keys are being distributed at the YMCA Hub (Holton Suite),
Gladstone Road/Court Road, on the following dates:

Sunday, 19th November (10am-4pm)

Residents are invited to collect the keys by bringing two proofs
of identity with them, one of which should be a utility bill or an
official document that proves their address. The other should be a
bank card, passport, library card, etc.
The Safer Vale Partnership contributed £30,000 towards this
project and chairman Cllr John Thomas said: "I am delighted Safer
Vale is able to allocate these funds to the Alleygates scheme which
will continue to improve security in Barry."
Cllr Geoff Cox, Cabinet Member for Visible Services, said: "This
scheme is an excellent example of the continuing partnership
between the Vale of Glamorgan Council and South Wales Police and
how we are working together to address crime and disorder
issues.”
Keith Jones, Operational Manager (Highway Maintenance), who is
also Project Manager, said: “Additional match funds from the
European Funding Office at £46,000 and from the Council itself has
enabled the project to be extended into these new areas.”
Chief Inspector Nigel Lewis, of Vale Police, said: “The
Alleygates project has produced remarkable results from 2002 to
2005, with a 73% reduction in house burglary, 60% cut in burglary
of commercial property, 74% reduction of thefts of vehicles, and
44% reduction of theft from vehicles.
"This Safer Vale project is making a real difference to people
in the Vale."
