Barry town centre car park open to the public - 13/11/06
The major part of the refurbished and improved public car park
at Wyndham Street in Barry is now available for public use.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council car park will provide much-needed
additional spaces in the centre of the town in the run up to
Christmas but a portion of the area has been set aside to cater for
continuing deliveries to the new County Library building. Although
building works were completed in October, the library is still
being fitted out prior to its opening the public in January.
The free car park, which will accommodate 78 vehicles, will be
open between 9.30am and 6.30pm, and will further allow vehicular
access for the library’s mobile unit in the new year and also for
pedestrian access to Central Park via new steps and a disabled
friendly footpath.
Already opened as part of the Council's multi-million Barry Town
Hall regeneration project, King Square and Central Park have
received much favourable public comment.
Welcoming the new facility, Council leader Cllr Jeffrey James
said: “I am pleased the car park has been completed in time to
allow its use in the very busy period before Christmas
"This car park refurbishment has been carried out as part of the
exciting Town Hall and new County Library developments, and
complete the current major works in the centre of Barry.”
Cabinet Member for Visible Services Cllr Geoff Cox expressed his
pleasure at the high standard of work carried out on site, and
said: "This car park will complement the existing highway car parks
provision in the centre of Barry.”
Cllr Cox added that further car parking would continue to be
provided as part of the forthcoming Holton Road redevelopment
scheme.
Operational Manager (Highways) Keith Jones said an application
would be made for the new Wyndham Street car park to be accredited
to the ‘Park Mark’ Safer Car Parks Standard which was already in
place at the town's Court Road multi-storey facility.
With the high standard of on site lighting and security
provisions, he said he anticipated the Wyndham Street car park
would meet the exacting Home Office requirements.
