Vale's progress on challenging schools' strategy -
03/11/06
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is currently considering plans
which could lead to redeveloped secondary schools at Cowbridge, St
Cyres (Penarth) and Llantwit Major being delivered at the same
time.
It was originally envisaged that the major work on the three
schools would be on a phased timetable between 2008 and 2012 but
one of the options being considered by MACE, who have been
appointed as the Council's technical consultants to progress the
strategy, is to deliver the rebuild/redevelopment as a "bundle" in
2009.
The multi-million pound strategy also includes investment in
other primary, secondary and special schools across the authority
up to 2016.
A final decision on the best way forward is likely to be made by
April next year.
A report from the Council's Head of Strategic Planning and
Performance, Martin Donovan, says the fast-tracking approach could
prove more cost-effective and, along with other measures under
consideration, help the authority address an estimated funding
shortfall of around £21.5m
Cabinet Member for Education and Training Cllr Tony Hampton
said: “The School Investment Strategy is an exciting and
challenging project for the Vale of Glamorgan and our pupils, and I
am delighted with the progress we are making.
"Our external advisers, MACE, are making a positive impact on
ensuring the strategy is delivered as quickly as possible and
within the original overall timescale."
