CSCS cards are a step in the right direction - 21/11/06
A group of personnel with the Vale of Glamorgan Council have
been presented with Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
cards by Cllr Anthony Ernest, Cabinet Member for Building
Maintenance and Fleet Management.
The scheme is supported by a host of key industry organisations
and provides the following benefits for individuals:
• recognition of skills, competence and qualifications;
• improved health and safety awareness;
• improved employment prospects, and
• identification of training needs to improve or update
skills.
Started more than 10 years ago, the CSCS scheme now covers more
than 200 occupations.
Operational Manager (Building and Vehicle Services) John
Gleeson, who has driven the initiative forward within the Vale,
said all Council senior managers and electrical operatives had
achieved their equivalent cards.
Mr Gleeson added: "The ‘leading by example’ approach will now
enable senior managers to guide their teams through the CSCS
process. Although the initiative adopted by building maintenance is
entirely voluntary, it is hoped that all construction related
staff/operatives will see the benefits, not only in terms of
personal recognition and development but also the enhanced status
of the entire department."
Cllr Ernest, who also presented employee Neil Stokes with his
Site Manager's Safety Training Scheme Certificate, said: “The
Council recognises and values the commitment shown by colleagues in
achieving their cards, and I would like to pass on my
congratulations to all those staff who have gained this excellent
achievement. This can only be a step in the right direction."
