Dragon Sport at new Cadoxton School Sports Hall - 20/11/06
A new £750,000 sports hall at Cadoxton Primary School is now
available for community use.
The hall, which will be officially opened early next year, has
been built through a grant from the Big Lottery Fund and, the size
of three badminton courts, can accommodate a range of sports such
as badminton, basketball, five-a-side soccer, netball and
boccia
There are also male, female and disabled changing facilities and
ample car parking facilities.
It will be used by Cadoxton pupils and youngsters from other
local schools during term time, and will be available for hire by
organised community groups during evenings and weekends.
The hall allows juniors and infants to join in with lots of new
and exciting extra curricular activities aiming to raise the
profile of a specific sport and improve individual and team skills
in a fun way. Organisations such as the Barry Buccaneers Badminton
Club will offer new opportunities for children.
Organised by Vale Dragon Sport officer Rachel McGuinness,
netball taster sessions have already been delivered to Key Stage 2
pupils by Welsh team captain Ursula Bowers. As national development
manager for the Welsh Netball Association, Ursula (affectionately
known as Billy) is keen to see children accessing opportunities in
school and continuing to play netball in the community and through
to adulthood.
During the first session in the hall, the Vale Rugby Development
Unit worked in partnership with Dragon Sport, the Future Blues and
the Welsh Rugby Union to deliver fun rugby sessions. The Future
Blues are now running a full programme.
Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative funded by
the National Lottery, and designed to offer seven to 11 year olds a
range of fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities, and Rachel
McGuinness said: “We were proud to be invited to deliver the first
session at Cadoxton Primary School’s new sports hall."
Dragon Sport will also offer special training aimed at supplying
teachers with new ideas through resource cards and equipment.
Cadoxton Primary will then kick off with a brand new Dragon Sport
Netball Club for Years 3 and 4 as well as a multi-sports club run
by teacher volunteers.
Community bookings are invited for Monday to Friday (5-9pm) and
for weekends (10am-5pm). Block bookings are welcome and the
facility is competitively priced. To make a booking, telephone
