RNLI's silver award for dedicated fundraiser - 02/11/06
A Barry woman's dedicated service to the Barry Dock Lifeboat
Station and her fundraising efforts for the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution have been highlighted at a reception hosted by Vale of
Glamorgan Mayor Cllr Nic Hodges.
Receiving the charity's silver award to mark 12 years' service
was Mrs Val Rockett, whose association with the RNLI in Barry
started as a member of then ladies' guild and continued when it
became a branch – men were invited to join the committee for the
first time – in 2001. Previously she had worked for 10 years at the
charity's Cardiff office.
In Barry, Val served as chairman of the fundraising body from
1996 until 2003 and is the current Flag Day organiser.
The awards are in recognition of the many hours given in time
and effort in raising funds for not only the lifeboats but also for
the charity's lifeguard and beach rescue work.
Praising the “outstanding efforts” of lifeboat crews across the
country, Cllr Hodges said: “We’re very grateful for the dedicated
and committed lifesaving work they undertake and delighted that
there are so many people who are willing to support them through
various means of fundraising.
"The local committees get together to organise flag days,
dances, coffee mornings, barbecues, sales and social functions; in
fact any type of event that will help raise money for the RNLI, and
branches and guilds are always keen for new support."
