Two-minute silence for Armistice Day - 13/11/06
Millions of people all over the country paused in their busy
lives for a two-minute silence on Armistice Day (November 11).
And, in Barry, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in two
world wars and more than 70 other conflicts were remembered when
members of the public and representatives of organisations,
including the local branches of the Royal British Legion and the
Merchant Seamen’s Association, joined Vale of Glamorgan councillors
and officers for a silent tribute and wreath-laying ceremony at the
Merchant Seamen’s Memorial outside the Civic Offices.
The start and end of the two-minute silence was marked by the
firing of a maroon rocket from the town’s Jenner Park Stadium, and
bugler Emma Lehman.
Wreaths were laid by Vale Mayor Cllr Nic Hodges, Helen Sanders
and Shaun Lewis (St Richard Gwyn RC High School), representing
local schools, Council Leader Cllr Jeffrey James, Labour and
Independent group leaders Cllrs Margaret Alexander and Gwyn John,
Plaid Cymru councillor Margaret Randall, Director of Legal and
Regulatory Peter Evans, Wing Commander Andy Taylor, of MoD St
Athan, Jim Greenway and John Hobbs, chairman of the Barry branches
of the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) and Royal British Legion
respectively. The Rev Malcolm Davies led the prayers.
Cllr Hodges said: “I would like to thank all those who turned up
at the Civic Offices to join me in this act of remembrance.”
