Cardiff Blues help launch Big Lottery Fund sports pitch in
Cowbridge - 30/11/06
Cowbridge school children had plenty to celebrate on Tuesday,
28 November when their £150,000 new, all weather sports pitch was
officially opened by Cardiff Blues players Rhys Williams and
Deiniol Jones.
Cowbridge primary schools Ysgol Iolo Morganwg and Y Bont Faen
will share the pitch. It will also be available for hire by the
local community during evenings and weekends. The development,
which includes an ‘outside classroom’ area, has been funded by
money from the Big Lottery Fund, awarded after a successful bid by
the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Rhys and Deiniol ‘kicked off’ the new pitch with the help of
some of the school children, then Cllr Tony Hampton, Vale Cabinet
member for Education and Training planted a tree as part of the
outside classroom to mark the occasion.
Cllr Hampton commented, “For years to come school children and
the local community are going to enjoy using this pitch. The Vale
Council is pleased to have been able to work with the Big Lottery
Fund to provide the facility.”
Alan Jones, head teacher of Ysgol Iolo Morganwg said, “The
schools have struggled for a long time without a proper games area,
having this fantastic new facility will make the whole experience
of games and sports activities that much more enjoyable, and it
will hopefully enthuse our youngsters to become the active, sports
minded people we want for the future.”
