Prizes for Vale of Glamorgan's top gardeners - 09/11/06
Residents and local businesses have again been praised for
extremely high quality entries in the annual Vale in Bloom
competition.
Organised annually by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the
competition is sponsored and supported by the Barry and Penarth
town councils.
During an awards evening at the Vale Civic Offices, Vale Cabinet
Member for Visible Services Cllr Geoff Cox thanked gardeners and
flower growers for their enthusiastic support.
“This year’s competition was another success story and we were
delighted with the encouraging number of entries, including new
faces, and extremely high standards.”
In Barry, Patricia Dewit enjoyed a triple success in the front
garden, hanging basket and window box categories,
Third last year, Rowland Jenkins, of Hanover Court, Langlands
Road, took top spot in the disabled gardener category, while Lianne
Williams, of Teifi Drive, pipped last year's winner, Billy Ray
Jones (St Paul's Avenue), to triumph in the children’s
category.
The Glenbrook Inn at Dobbins Road gained a third successive
success in the commercial section.
In Penarth, Dennis and Anne Lush, of Tudor Close, won front
garden honours for the second successive year, and also took the
overall Vale award. Gordon Thomas, of Sullivan Close, also pulled
off a second successive success in the window box category.
Clifford and Pauline Parker, of Byrd Crescent, achieved a first
success in the hanging basket category.
Kenneth Knapp, of Alberta Road, lifted the Robert and Joan
Ernest Trophy for the best entry in the town’s seafront
conservation area for the third successive year, with a similar
feat being achieved by Gwyn James Court – a group led by Rowland
Day – in the residential home/sheltered accommodation category. The
complex also won the same category in the overall competition.
In the Vale villages competition, Keith and Jean Powell, of
Illtyd Avenue, Llantwit Major, repeated their success of last year
in the front garden category, while the Four Bells at Rock Road, St
Athan, achieved a similar feat as best commercial premises in both
