Wick school's waste wonders! - 24/11/06
Ingenious pupils at a Vale of Glamorgan primary school will be
displaying Christmas decorations with a difference again this
year.
And waste management officers at the Vale Council are hoping
that the excellent example set by youngsters at Wick and Marcross
Church in Wales school and their families in producing decorations
from items destined for the bin will inspire others to follow
suit.
Headteacher Ceri Thomas explained: “We’re really do like to
promote the reduce, re-use and recycle message in our school,
especially ways that we can all get involved in, encourage a bit of
creativity and are fun.”
“We started a project this time last year where the children and
their families made decorations from things they’d finished with,
rather than buying them.
"Our local families really took the invitation to be creative to
heart and made some amazing decorations, which we’ll be using again
this year.”
To continue their green work, the school takes the re-use
message one step further at the end of the term by donating their
Christmas tree to the local church so that others can enjoy
something they’ve finished with.
Vale Council waste awareness officer Sam Harrison said: "The
Council's 'What’s in your bin?’ campaign asks us all to think about
what we throw away, and whether we could reduce, re-use and recycle
our rubbish.
"This example from the school is great, just using things we all
probably have at home like old tissue boxes, loo rolls and egg
shells.”
"This project shows us that being creative need not cost a
fortune. Making something at home with the children cam be fun, a
cheap way of spending a cold, wet afternoon and parents might even
surprise themselves with how imaginative they are."
