Barry's revamped Central Park open to the public -
10/10/06
Part of the multi-million-pound regeneration scheme breathing
new life into Barry, the town's newly revamped Central Park opened
its gates to the public this week.
With its landscaped terraces and children's play areas, the park
forms an ideal backdrop to the flagship Town Hall, County Library
and King Square redevelopment.
The £10m scheme has been funded mainly by the Vale of Glamorgan
Council through its capital programme, with grant aid support from
the Welsh European Funding Office, Welsh Assembly, former Welsh
Development Agency and a Clear Skies grant towards a biomass boiler
for the new library.
Vale Council Leader, Cllr Jeffrey James, said:
"At last, with the gates now open, people can see Central Park
returned to its true place at the heart of Barry, providing for
people of all ages.
Local residents who took an early opportunity to visit the park
were very pleased with the layout. I hope that people make the best
use of it. This is just the first part of the regeneration to be
opened to the public and the Town Hall, exhibition area (old
library) and new library building will be available for inspection
at a family day being planned for November."
He added: "I know that all of the Council Cabinet Members share
my pride in restoring the Town Hall, building the new Central
Library, and making Central Park and King Square an icon of Barry
and a point of pride for the Vale."
