Cowbridge children scoop Scope visit - 23/10/06

Cowbridge's Ysgol Iolo Morganwg celebrated a green start to the school year when they became the first Vale school this term to visit the recycling charity Scope as part of a new project developed in conjunction with the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

As part of their SCRAP project, (Scope Community Recycling Awareness Project), Scope have thrown open their doors to local schools to raise awareness of recycling and its importance to the community, and explain how Vale schools can work with the charity by collecting materials, such as cans, for recycling.

Council waste awareness officer Sam Harrison said she was happy to promote the project to local schools, and added: "Our local awareness campaign, ‘What’s in your bin?’, asks us all to reduce, reuse and recycle. We know from asking our schools that they’re keen on educational visits to actually see recycling in action, to make it ‘real’ for pupils. Here they have the chance to see a local example.”

The visits to the charity’s Barry site on the Ty Verlon Industrial Estate give young people the chance to look around the recycling plant. Sully Primary School were the first Vale school to visit in May, and the visits will continue this school year, much to the delight of Julie Brown, outreach worker from Scope.

Julie said: “We are always delighted to welcome local schools to our site. A big thank you to the staff and pupils at Ysgol Iolo Morganwg for coming. I hope that all the young people enjoyed their recycling experience.”

Julie added: “We would love to see other Vale schools coming to Scope in the future. If any schools are interested, please do get in touch, I’d really like to hear from you.”

Any school wishing to visit Scope can contact Julie on (01446) 733418.
