Karate club for young people with disabilities - 26/10/06

A Barry-based martial arts club has launched an additional class specifically for children and young teenagers with disabilities.

The Vale Karate Club is presented by Chief Instructor Rob Copeland and meets weekly at Barry YMCA on Court Road.

Children aged eight or over can join in and develop their skills every Monday from 7pm – 8pm and the club, whilst in its infancy, already has good word-of-mouth reviews from its newest members

It has since attracted more young people who are keen to have fun and participate in this disciplined sports development activity.

Karate literally means ‘empty hand’ and is primarily known for being a martial art that features punching, kicking, knee or elbow strikes and open hand techniques. Students may study and progress securing a coloured belt, starting with white and, ultimately, striving to earn black. The learning process takes years and students must demonstrate excellence in disciplines such as balance, focus, speed and reflexes.

Linda Ruston, the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Disability Sport Wales Development Officer and one of the club's organisers, says: “The Vale Karate Club offers a fantastic opportunity for teenagers and young children to get involved and try something new. Karate encourages self-discipline, and participants are encouraged to achieve at their own pace.”

Joining the club is easy, and it costs just £3 per week. For more information, contact either Linda Ruston on (01446) 704728 or 07725 446493. Alternatively, contact either Rob or Cathy on (01446) 419701 or email vale@valekarate.com
