Vale organisations welcome cash boost - 02/10/06

Vale of Glamorgan-based organisations continue to benefit from a pot of lottery funding provided by the Sports Council for Wales.

Administered by the Vale Council's Sports, Arts and Play Development Team, the Community Chest scheme has made a significant difference to a range of groups and organisations across the area since its inception seven years ago.

Following the last meeting of the Community Chest Panel, 12 applicants have been offered grants to help purchase equipment, receive help with training and assist with offering sustainable opportunities to increase physical activity participation in a club, society or work place environment.

Five organisations receive the maximum £750:

• Whitmore Bay Nippers Surf Lifesaving Club – purchasing ‘nipper boards’ and increasing participation

• Caerau Vale Trampoline Club – coach education and opportunities for people with disabilities

• Colcot Amateur Boxing Club – increasing opportunities

• Penarth Windsor Lawn Tennis Club – creating sessions for adults

• Vale Reds Football Club – creating opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities through coach education, initial hall hire and purchase of equipment

Other successful applicants were:

• Vale Karate – setting up classes for people with disabilities, helping with coach education and purchasing equipment.

• Hen Goleg League of Friends – increasing opportunities for people with disabilities to access swimming.

• Dinas Powys Cricket Club – encouraging participation, particularly among girls

• Cardiff & Vale Scout Council – creating archery opportunities through coach education and purchase of equipment.

• Inter Penarth Football Club – creation of new football teams

• Welsh Karate Jutsu Kai – improving standards

• Llantwit Major Football Club – creating new teams, purchasing new equipment and helping to educate coaches

Vale Sports, Arts and Play Development Team Manager Karen Davies urges organisations to apply now for the next round of grants to be allocated in November.

She says: “Whilst the clubs who were successful from this month's panel were sports organisations, we do welcome other sectors to apply, eg, youth clubs, Women's Institutes, local historical societies, Communities First Partnerships, the health sector and sliming groups.”

Karen adds: “There is nothing to lose by submitting an application and we are happy to consider awarding funds to workplace initiatives, secondary schools, colleges, youth entitlement partnerships, children's disability centres, community development groups and youth offending teams who also run schemes ecnouraging physical activity.”

The next deadline for submitting applications is 30th October and application forms can be obtained from Julie Morgan on (01446) 704754.
