Works starts on new Clive Road steps - 11/09/06
Work has begun to reopen an important pedestrian route linking
Barry Island with the on-going redevelopment of Barry Docks.
The work is being undertaken on Associated British Ports land
and is funded by both the Welsh Assembly Government and the Vale of
Glamorgan Council. The route is expected to be open to the public
in November.
Cllr Mike Harvey, Vale Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Tourism
and Leisure, said: “The commencement of this work is largely down
to the partnership approach adopted by the Vale Council, the Welsh
Assembly and Associated British Ports in response to local
needs.”
Vale AM Jane Hutt, said: "I am delighted that the reopening of
the Clive Road steps is now imminent and that work is well and
truly underway on site. I am very pleased that this important link
between the Island and the Waterfront will once again be able to be
used by local people and visitors."
She added: "This is the culmination of over three years of
partnership work involving the WDA, Vale Council, ABP and the Barry
Island Residents' Association, and has been made possible by
approximately £70,000 of Welsh Assembly funding."
Baruc Ward representative Vale Clllr Steffan Wiliam said: “The
re-opening of this vital link has a high level of support among the
local community.”
Port Manager (Cardiff and Barry) Callum Couper commented: “ABP
has been pleased to work with the Welsh Assembly, the Vale Council
and the local community to achieve a solution in reconnecting Barry
Island to the town of Barry.”
