On the road to keep residents safe and sound - 29/09/06

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's Trading Standards department are going out and about to offer help and advice to the over-60s during the next week.

All the area's elderly residents are invited to this year's Safe and Sound roadshows, which take place every autumn across South Wales as part of a targeted initiative.

Trading Standards officers from the Council will be on hand at five roadshows in the Vale along with representatives from the Local Health Board, Age Concern, Department of Work and Pensions, local Policem, Fire Service and other accident prevention charities and information providers.

Visitors will be able to take full advantage of free advice on home security, crime prevention and how to stay safe from fire and other risks in their homes.

Free electric blanket safety checks will be offered to the over-60s, and residents will be provided with a replacement blanket if theirs is found to be unsafe.

Kate Palmer, of Vale Trading Standards, said: "We are pleased that the Safe and Sound roadshows will be continuing to provide advice and support to residents of the Vale this year.

"The roadshow will reach the people most at risk and provide advice from professionals who are committed to working with vulnerable residents."

The first Safe and Sound Roadshow in the Vale will take place at Sully Sports and Leisure Club on Thursday, 5th October, between 9.30am and 12 noon. The roadshow then moves to Dinas Powys (Murch) Community Centre on the same day between 2 and 5pm.

Roadshows will also be held on Friday, 6th October, at Wick Community Hall between 9.30am and noon and at the Llantonian Hall in Llantwit Major from 2 until 4pm.

The final roadshow will be at St Helen’s Church Hall, Barry, from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday, 10th October.
