Choosing a cattery

Your cat will need to be provided for every time you go away, you can do this by putting him/her in a cattery. The following questions and answers may help you make an informed decision about the establishment and will help you meet the specific needs of your pet.

White Cat

  • Is the premises licensed?
  • The licence must be on public display at all times in the cattery, if it is not licenced do not use it's services and report to the local council where the cattery is situated.
  • Is there a vaccination certificate?
  • A  vaccinnation certificate should be available to view,  if not do not use report to the council and make sure you take you own vaccination information.
  • Are there indoor and outdoor facilities?
  • Many cats enjoy an outdoor run and this also ensures good airflow to help prevent disease. Where the cattery is indoor only ensure that it is well ventilated.
  • Is the accommodation appropriate for my pet?
  • The accommodation should comprise of a separate enclosed sleeping area with own exercise run, it should be warm, dry and secure.
  • Should my cat share accommodation in the cattery?
  • Only cats from the same household should be boarded together.
  • What gaps should there be between units?
  • A minimum gap of 0.6m should be present or if joined together, effective sneeze barriers.
  • Will my cat be stimulated?
  • Scratching posts and toys should be available preferably and if possible an enriching view.
  • What about my older or infirm cat?
  • Do not use raised ‘penthouse’ style accommodation as older or infirm cats  may have difficulties using a ladder or ramp.
  • What about grooming?
  • If you have long haired cats ensure that there grooming facilities available.
  • What about the healthcare and medication my cat requires?
  • If possible take details of your cat's medical history and provide contact details for your vet should the cattery need to contact them in an emergency.
  • Do I need to bring my own pet food?
  • If your cat follows a specialist or prescription diet you may need to provide own food.
  • And finally, it sound's obvious, but don't forget to leave your full contact details should the cattery need to contact you!
