Animal Health and welfare – Licensing

All movements of cattle, deer, sheep, goats and pigs are controlled by the General licence issued by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

In addition to the general licence, movements must be covered by a movement licence known as an AML1 for sheep, AML2 for pigs and AML24 for deer.

General movement licences

The movement of livestock in Wales must adhere to the conditions of the appropriate General licence.

General licences are available from the Welsh Assembly Government website.

Animal movement licences

Animal movement licence (AML) documents are used mainly to report animal movements under a General licence.

All deer, pig, sheep and goat movements must be accompanied by a completed AML movement document.  All movements must be reported by the recipient of the animals to their Local Authority within three days of the movement taking place. The Local Authority (of the destination premises), destination, haulier and departure each require a copy of the AML movement document.

Animal movement licences are available from The Welsh Government or from the Trading Standards Office.

Animal Movement Licence forms can  be returned to the Trading Standards department via post or email.  The email address is:
