Transfer to Secondary School: Year 7

Applications to linked feeder secondary schools

Secondary Schools are classified as Community, Foundation or Aided Schools. If your child is attending Year 6 of a Vale Primary or Junior School and is due to transfer to a Secondary school in the September, you will receive a letter and application form from the relevant admission authority of your linked feeder school.

It is a legal requirement for all parents to express a preference for the school they wish their child to attend/transfer to, even if it is the school allocated by the feeder primary school arrangements.

Failure to complete and return an application form could lead, if demand exceeds the number of places available, to some parents/carers being denied a place for their child at their local school.

Applications to schools outside local catchment areas

Should a parent prefer his/her child to go to a community school other than their catchment area school, an out of catchment/non-feeder application should be sent to the Learning and Development Directorate by the closing date specified in the corresponding Parental Guide to School Admissions. No firm guarantee can be given that the parents' preference can be met in every case, as requests for places in certain schools may exceed the number of places available.

Applying for your chosen school

Admissions to secondary schools will normally be granted provided a schools standard number or statutory class size limit, where applicable, will not be exceeded. Where the number of applications for admission to a school exceeds the number of places available, i.e. where a standard number has been reached, places will be allocated applying recognised Admission Criteria which can be found on page 25 of the Parental Guide to School Admissions.

Where parents knowingly give false information in order to obtain the advantage of a particular school for their child to which they would not otherwise be entitled, the council reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a place. Parents may render themselves guilty of an offence under Section 5(b) of the Perjury Act 1911.
