The Foundation Phase
This is a Welsh Assembly Government, national reform covering
the combined ages of 3-5 Year olds and 5-7 Years olds i.e. Early
Years and Key Stage 1 provision. The statutory roll-out of the
Foundation Phase will begin in September 2008 (for the 3-5 year
olds) and be completed by July 2011.
The Foundation Phase proposes a continuum of learning for
children from the ages of 3 to 7. The new curriculum is based on
the Desirable Outcomes for Children’s Learning before Compulsory
School Age and links with the National Curriculum for Key Stage
1.
It contains seven areas of learning (AOLS):
- Personal and Social development and Well-being; Cultural
Diversity
- Language, Literacy and Communication Skills;
- Mathematical Development;
- Bilingualism
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
- Physical Development;
- Creative Development.
The Foundation Phase advocates children learning through first
hand, experiential activities and play, and places a child’s
personal and social development and well being at the heart of the
curriculum.
