Governor Support Unit (GSU)
The Governor Support Unit
is located within Provincial House in Barry and is part of the
School Improvement Service (SIS).
Advice and Support
Governors are volunteers who
work closely with the Headteacher and school staff and are part of
the overall leadership and management. The governing body helps
govern the school framework- the Headteacher is responsible for the
day to day management. Together they are responsible for
managing the school budget, recruitment of staff, maintaining links
with parents and the community and promoting high standards of
educational achievement.
The Governor Support Unit (GSU)
aims to work with governors in the Vale to support and encourage
effective governance, through the provision of information, advice
and training, appropriate to the needs of governing
bodies.
The Governor Support Unit (GSU):
- advise on issues relating to school
governance and governing body procedures;
- schedules a termly training programme for
governors and clerks;
- co-ordinate arrangements for the election of
governors;
- maintains a governor database for all
Vale schools;
- produces a termly Newsletter;
- produces a ‘Guidance for Governors’ series of
publications;
- updates governing bodies regularly on current
local and national initiatives;
- hosts regular Education Update and Briefing
Sessions for Chairs/Vice Chairs of governing bodies in the
Vale;
- jointly hosts an Annual Governor Conference;
and
- supports the Vale School Governors’
Association (VSGA).

of ways to suit different governors' circumstances;
- provide effective training and support for
the governors' role;
- provide prompt, accurate and understandable
information in response to queries from governing bodies;
- provide an efficient and responsive booking
and administration service for training courses; and
- ensure absolute confidentiality in its relationships and
dealings with governing bodies.

The Governor Support Unit (GSU) is committed
to the provision of high quality services that address and support
the development needs of Vale governors and enables governing
bodies to contribute fully to school improvement.
