Vale of Glamorgan Network of Healthy Schools Scheme
The Vale of Glamorgan Healthy Schools Scheme
is part of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme, funded by
Welsh Assembly Government.
The aim of the scheme is to improve the health
and well being of children and young people in Wales.
The aim of Welsh Assembly Government is for
all schools in Wales to be part of the Healthy Schools Scheme by
2010.
Schools in The Vale of Glamorgan have shown
great enthusiasm for joining the Scheme, and to date 58 out the 61
LEA schools, including Special schools, Secondary schools and
Nurseries, plus Headlands NCH school, are part of the Vale of
Glamorgan scheme.
The four overall aims of the scheme are:
- To enhance the environment so that it promotes good health
- To develop good home/school/community links
- To develop and implement a coherent health education
curriculum
- To develop the school as a health promoting workplace
Schools commit to the scheme for a minimum of
three years to embed health awareness within the school's culture,
and are expected to meet local and national Healthy Schools
standards, as well as promoting and developing three health actions
per year.
At the end of each year schools are assessed.
Those schools that have met the required standard and delivered
their Healthy Schools targets are awarded a plaque from Welsh
Assembly Government, presented at an annual awards ceremony.
Some examples of the many activities that schools have
undertaken include:
- Fruit Tuck Shop
- Healthier vending
- Water on desks
- Safe Routes to School
- Playground zoning
- Anti-bullying initiatives
- School Councils
- After school activity clubs
- Sensory gardens, and many more
The Vale of Glamorgan Scheme is co-ordinated
by the NPHS through the Local Public Health Team, and actively
supported by the Local Education Authority and the Local Health
Board
