Physical Education and School Sport in the Vale of

Glamorgan

The P.E. and School Sport project, a partnership between the Welsh Government (WG) and Sports Wales (formerly Sports Council for Wales) is one of the three main Active Young People programmes.

Background

In June 2001, the WG published the P.E. and School Sport Plan which promotes a common vision for improving standards in P.E. and School Sport.  Following a successful pilot phase, the Welsh Government reinforced its commitment to the P.E.S.S. initiative by further investing £5 million between 2003 and 2006.

The main aim of the P.E.S.S. initiative is to improve standards in physical education and develop the quality of P.E. and school sport.

Structure

Within each local authority P.E.S.S. Development Centres (D.C’s) have been formed.  A Development Centre is a consortium of partner schools usually based around a secondary school and its feeder primary schools, other partners may include: sport development unit; local leisure centre; special school or F.E. college.  D.C.s in each authority in Wales are managed in partnership with a P.E.S.S. Co-ordinator working closely with each D.C’s Partnership Leader.

The P.E.S.S. Co-ordinator is responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, monitoring and reviewing progress.  The P.E.S.S. Co-ordinator for the Vale is Lesley Dancey, formerly a Primary Teacher in the Vale.

Each D.C. has a Partnership Leader who are primary or secondary P.E. teachers working closely with the schools in their partnership to implement the agreed priority areas.
