Healthy Eating
These pages provide information about healthy eating and
nutritional advice.
Everyone knows that the key to good health is a balance of a
healthy diet and regular exercise.
Eight guidelines for a healthy diet
The Government has produced eight guidelines for a healthy
diet:
- Enjoy your food
- Eat a variety of different foods
- Eat the right amount to be a healthy weight
- Eat plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre
- Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
- Don't eat too many foods that contain a lot of fat
- Don't have sugary foods and drinks too often
- If you drink alcohol drink sensibly
Ensuring that you eat a healthy and balanced diet is one of the
key ways to adopting a healthier lifestyle. No one single type of
food will provide our bodies with the nutrients needed to work
properly. It is vital that mixtures of foods are eaten.
Five food groups
Using the Food Standard Agency's The Balance of Good Health as a
guide, there are five commonly accepted food groups:
Picking a variety of foods from the first four groups will help
ensure that our bodies get the nutrients needed to remain healthy
and function properly.
Foods from the fifth group are not essential to a healthy diet.
They are an energy source but contain few nutrients.
Vitamins and minerals
You may find information about vitamins and minerals at the
Food Standards Agency website.
It contains advice and safety information that you need to make
informed choices about all the vitamins, minerals and trace
elements that are essential for health. You should be able to get
all the nutrients that your body requires through a balanced diet,
but if you decide to take supplements please be aware that taking
too many and for too long can cause harmful effects.
