Learners’ Entitlement Statement

for the Vale of Glamorgan Library and Information Service

 

A key objective of the Library and Information Service is ‘to support lifelong learning through the role of the local library as a gateway to learning’.

 

 

In the library, learners can expect

  • A comfortable and welcoming environment that is conducive and attractive to both learners and potential learners
  • A spread of opening hours that cater for differing needs and lifestyles of learners
  • Free Internet access and ICT facilities at all local libraries
  • Trained staff to help learners find and use resources
  • Information skills sessions to develop skills that will help learners make best use of facilities, information and resources
  • Taster sessions, classes and other learning opportunities at local libraries run in conjunction with partner services

 

Making resources available, learners can expect

  • An appropriate range of resources to reflect their expressed needs
  • Access to quality online services provided in the library and to learners at home or other convenient location
  • Cross catalogue searching facilities and an inter-library lending service.
  • Online links (via website) to relevant and reliable sources of information

 

Working together, libraries will offer

  • Opportunities to relevant organisation to promote learning through the libraries
  • Partnership working with other learning providers to ensure the best possible access to local services for learners
  • The development of clear partnership arrangements in the delivery of learning opportunities in libraries
  • Support to local tutors and classes through flexible loan of book and other resources

 

Raising awareness, libraries will

  • Provide impartial and accurate information about learning opportunities
  • Provide information about the full range of services and facilities that libraries can provide
  • Promote services available for learners as widely as possible

 

Responding to need, libraries will

  • Seek learners’ views on the learning opportunities available in libraries, and take account of these views in planning new developments
  • Make effective use of the mobile library service to meet learners’ needs
  • Be open to new developments and opportunities that will enhance or extend the learning experience of local people
  • Develop the role of our Outreach workers to respond to the particular needs of disadvantaged areas and maximise the contribution we can make to strategies and plans to meet those needs``
