Tuesday 17 January
The Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Everybody in the group agreed that this was a strange book,
though not all found it easy going and a couple said
they didn't particularly like it. There were two
enthusiastic members of the group, however, one who found it
enjoyable and she laughed a lot at the experiences of the main
character, Pi, and another who found it very spiritual and wise.
Pi's spirituality and his preparedness to pray to all the gods of
every faith got him through his ordeal on the boat. The
situation may have exposed his baser nature but his despair was
what kept him going because it made him fully aware of his
existence.
This passionate appreciation of the book won many of the group
round and by the end it was agreed that the book was worth a second
reading.
